Existing law provides that the maximum penalty that may be imposed for a violation of a
parish ordinance is a $500 fine and imprisonment of 30 days in the parish jail. Additionally
authorizes the imposition of up to 100 hours of community service, in addition to or in lieu
of penalties authorized by existing law for a violation of a parish ordinance.
Existing law authorizes the imposition of a civil penalty not to exceed $1,000 a day for each
violation of certain waste treatment ordinances.
Existing law provides for the maximum penalties that may be imposed for a violation of an
ordinance in Jefferson Parish. Provides that the maximum term of imprisonment is six
months. Prior law provided that the maximum fine was $500. New law increases the
maximum fine to $1,000.
Existing law additionally authorizes the Jefferson Parish governing authority to impose a fine
of not more than $5,000 and imprisonment of up to six months for the violation of certain
ordinances, including any ordinance prohibiting the dumping of trash, debris, garbage, or
other solid and liquid waste.
New law additionally authorizes the Jefferson Parish governing authority to impose higher
fines for a violation of a parish ordinance on property zoned or used for industrial activities.
Provides that the maximum fines for violations on such property are $25,000 for a first
violation and $50,000 for a subsequent violation.
Effective August 1, 2024.
