This bill amends the existing law regarding the battery of a bus operator in Louisiana. It clarifies the definition of a "bus operator" to include any person employed by a public transit system who operates a bus or an electronically operated cable car while on duty, explicitly excluding school bus operators.
Additionally, the bill increases the penalties for committing battery against a bus operator. The fine for such an offense is raised from a maximum of five hundred dollars to one thousand dollars. Furthermore, the minimum imprisonment term is increased from forty-eight hours to seventy-two hours, and the maximum imprisonment term is extended from six months to one year, with the possibility of hard labor, and without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.
