This bill amends the definition of "period of activation" within the Louisiana National Guard's death and disability benefits framework. Specifically, it removes the previous language that defined this period as "any state of emergency declared by the governor of the state of Louisiana" and replaces it with a broader definition that includes "any period of state active duty ordered by the governor of the state of Louisiana pursuant to R.S. 29:7." This change aims to clarify the circumstances under which National Guard members are eligible for benefits related to death and disability.

The provisions of this Act will apply to all deaths or disabilities occurring on or after January 1, 2024, and it will take effect upon the governor's signature or, if not signed, after the designated time for bills to become law without signature. If the governor vetoes the bill and it is later approved by the legislature, it will become effective the day after such approval.
