This bill enacts a new provision under R.S. 17:192(B)(3) that mandates the provision of free breakfast and lunch to eligible students in grades kindergarten through twelve who meet federal eligibility guidelines for reduced-price meals. The bill specifies that these meals will be provided at no cost to the students, and it outlines the criteria for determining eligibility based on household size and income levels as defined by the School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program.

Additionally, the bill requires the state Department of Education to reimburse the governing authority of a school nutrition program for each free meal served. The reimbursement amount will be equal to the difference between the rates for a free meal and a reduced-priced meal, as determined annually by the United States Department of Agriculture. The provisions of this bill will take effect for the 2023-2024 school year, contingent upon the passage of a specific appropriation by the Louisiana Legislature.
