Existing law provides that a patient or his legal representative shall have a right to obtain a
copy of the patient's entire medical records related in any way to the patient upon furnishing
a signed authorization.
Existing law defines "authorized" as a consent, an approval, or an authorization between
persons.
New law retains existing law and adds that a patient's life, health, disability, or long-term
care insurance company or its counsel, who has been authorized, as defined by existing law,
by the patient, shall have a right to obtain a copy of a patient's entire medical record.
Effective August 1, 2021.
