The proposed bill, known as the Opioid Patients Right to Know Act, mandates that prescribers discuss specific risks associated with opioid medications with patients or their guardians before issuing an initial prescription for a schedule II controlled substance or any other opioid pain reliever. The required discussion topics include the risks of addiction and overdose, dangers of combining opioids with other depressants, the necessity of the prescription, available alternative treatments, and the overall risks of the prescribed drugs. Additionally, prescribers must document this discussion in the patient's medical record.
However, the bill specifies that these requirements do not apply to patients currently undergoing cancer treatment, receiving hospice care, residing in long-term healthcare facilities, or those prescribed medications for substance abuse or opioid dependence. The act will take effect upon its publication in the statute book.
