The bill mandates that each school district's board of education must assess the number of students eligible for free meals under the national school lunch program. It allows school districts to provide necessary instruction and assistance to ensure accurate participation in this program. If a school district is eligible for the community eligibility provision under 42 U.S.C. 1759a, the board must consider participation. Should the board wish to participate and it would not result in financial hardship, they must adopt a resolution by majority vote to affirm this decision. Conversely, if participation would cause financial hardship, the board must publicly demonstrate this hardship and adopt a resolution stating their inability to participate.
Additionally, the state department of education is tasked with assisting any school district with qualifying schools in their efforts to participate in the community eligibility provision. The bill will take effect upon its publication in the statute book.
