The bill amends the Kansas food, drug, and cosmetic act to prohibit certain food additives in meals provided by schools participating in food service programs, including free or reduced-price meals. Starting in the 2027-2028 school year, schools will be banned from serving food that contains specific additives such as brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, and various artificial colors.

Additionally, the bill requires schools to certify during inspections that their facilities do not serve food containing these prohibited additives. If a school cannot certify compliance, it must submit a corrective action plan within 30 days and post a notice of the violation on its website for one year. Schools that incorrectly certify compliance must also notify parents or guardians of the violation. This legislation aims to enhance food safety and transparency in school meal programs.
