The resolution honors the service and sacrifice of Danny J. Petersen, a Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient. Born on March 11, 1949, in Horton, Kansas, Petersen joined the U.S. Army in 1969 and served as a Specialist Fourth Class in Company B, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. On January 9, 1970, during a fierce attack by the North Vietnamese Army, Petersen displayed extraordinary bravery by moving his armored personnel carrier to protect a disabled U.S. vehicle and its crew. Despite being wounded, he carried a comrade to safety and provided covering fire for his platoon, ultimately earning him the Medal of Honor, which was awarded posthumously by President Gerald Ford in 1974.
In recognition of his heroic actions, a section of US-75 near Netawaka, Kansas, has been designated as the "Danny J. Petersen Memorial Highway." Petersen's name is also inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and he is buried in Netawaka Cemetery. The resolution, sponsored by Senator Craig Bowser, expresses the Senate's gratitude for Petersen's service and sacrifice, and directs the Secretary of the Senate to send copies of the resolution to relevant parties.
