This bill amends K.S.A. 20-2201 to change the composition of the judicial council in Kansas. The current membership of four resident lawyers is replaced with one resident lawyer from each congressional district, along with a justice of the supreme court, a judge of the court of appeals, two district judges from different judicial districts, and the chairpersons of the judiciary committees from both the house of representatives and the senate. The bill specifies that the new membership structure will not affect the terms of current members until their positions become vacant after July 1, 2025.
Additionally, the bill repeals the existing section of K.S.A. 20-2201, streamlining the legal framework governing the judicial council. The chief justice of the supreme court will continue to appoint all members, except for legislative members, for a term of four years. The act will take effect upon its publication in the statute book.
