The bill, known as the Consumer Protection Related to Hospital Price Transparency Act, mandates that hospitals in Kansas provide clear and accessible online pricing information for their top 300 procedures, including a plain language description of each procedure. Additionally, hospitals are required to furnish patients with an estimate of their payment responsibilities for elective procedures, tests, or services upon request, as well as to post written information about this process in conspicuous areas of the hospital and on their websites. The attorney general is given the authority to enforce these provisions and will notify hospitals of the requirements before the act takes effect on July 1, 2025.

Notably, the bill removes the provision that allowed patients to file civil actions against hospitals for noncompliance with the act. Instead, if a hospital is found to be noncompliant, the attorney general will refer the case to the United States Department of Health and Human Services for enforcement. The act emphasizes the importance of price transparency in healthcare, aiming to protect consumers by ensuring they have access to necessary pricing information before receiving medical services.
