The proposed bill establishes conditional term limits for members of the Kansas legislature, effective January 11, 2027. It stipulates that no individual may serve more than six two-year terms in the House of Representatives or more than three four-year terms in the Senate. However, individuals who have reached these limits may still run for reelection if they are nominated by petition for each subsequent election. The bill also clarifies that only full terms will be counted towards these limits, and terms served in the House and Senate will be considered separately.
Additionally, the bill amends K.S.A. 25-205 to require that candidates for state representative or state senator who have reached the term limits must have a nomination petition filed on their behalf to appear on the official primary ballot. The language of the nomination petition is also revised to include a statement acknowledging the candidate's prior service under the new term limits. The existing section of K.S.A. 25-205 is repealed, and the bill will take effect upon publication in the statute book.
