SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 59

Federal and State Affairs

Brief*
SB 59 would designate the Thursday immediately
preceding the third Monday in January of 2023 and in
subsequent years as “Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at the
Capitol.”

Background
The bill was requested for introduction by Senator
Faust-Goudeau and Senator Haley.

Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs
In the Senate Committee hearing, proponent testimony
was provided by Senator Faust-Goudeau, Senator Haley, a
representative of the Kansas African American Affairs
Commission, and a private citizen. The proponents indicated
the designation would be a meaningful way to acknowledge
Dr. King’s legacy and invite everyone to join the annual
events planned for the day.
Representative Boyd, representatives of the Kansas
African American Museum and the Racial Profiling Advisory
Board of Wichita, and a private citizen provided written-only
proponent testimony.
No other testimony was provided.
