1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the Morris
2 Performing Arts Center on its 100th anniversary.
3 Whereas, In 1922, the Orpheum Theatre chain opened the
4 Palace Theatre;
5 Whereas, In its early days, the Palace Theatre served as a
6 vaudeville house where Broadway troupes traveling from New
7 York to Chicago stopped in South Bend to perform;
8 Whereas, The theatre has hosted many famous artists and
9 actors, including the Ziegfeld Follies, George Burns and
10 Gracie Allen, Harry Houdini, Bette Davis, Bing Crosby, Debbie
11 Reynolds, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong,
12 Marvin Gaye, Hank Williams, Stevie Wonder, Jerry Lee Lewis,
13 REO Speedwagon, The Eagles, Z.Z. Top, Aerosmith, Loretta
14 Lynn, Fleetwood Mac, Ted Nugent, Judas Priest, B.B. King,
15 Eddie Money, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Stevie Ray
16 Vaughan and Double Trouble;
17 Whereas, In 1959, the Palace Theatre re-opened under the
18 name the Morris Civic Auditorium;
19 Whereas, In 2000, the Morris Civic Auditorium re-opened
20 under the name the Morris Performing Arts Center;
21 Whereas, Today, the Morris regularly hosts nationally-
22 known performances in music, dance, and theatre, and serves
23 as the home of the South Bend Symphony, providing the city of

1 South Bend with cultural enlightenment, a multi-million dollar
2 annual economic impact, and a regional center for performing
3 arts;
4 Whereas, In 2020, a group of dedicated volunteers in
5 conjunction with representatives from the City of South Bend
6 began the Neverending Encore Campaign, the most expensive
7 capital campaign in the theatre's history, to improve the
8 theatre's aging mechanical systems, replace the original
9 concrete floor, and expand the building's north side;
10 Whereas, In 2021, the Indiana General Assembly
11 contributed to this renovation by approving the allocation of
12 the local innkeeper's tax to be used for the remodeling and
13 enhancement of the Morris Performing Arts Center; and
14 Whereas, Throughout its history, the Morris Performing
15 Arts Center has served as a beacon for cultural achievement for
16 the city of South Bend and the surrounding region: Therefore,
17 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
18 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
19 concurring:
20 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors the
21 Morris Performing Arts Center on its 100th anniversary.
22 SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby
23 directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to the Morris
24 Performing Arts Center.
