1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring students from
2 Norwell Middle School in Ossian, Indiana, as the National
3 Champions of the Future City Competition.
4 Whereas, Students Jordyn Xayyachack, Teagan Lesley,
5 Madeline McCabe, Nevada Lenwell, Morgan Batdorff, Connor
6 Reed, Cassandra Coyne, Eli Randol, and Lukas Mashuda
7 teamed with educators Bill Bostain, Stephanie Scott, Bonnie
8 Dickey, and volunteer mentor Albert Bostain represented
9 Norwell Middle School and the state of Indiana in Washington,
10 D.C., at the 2020 Future City Competition;
11 Whereas, The Norwell Middle School team, Yemoga, won the
12 19th Indiana Regional Future City Competition, an event
13 supported by multiple organizations and dedicated volunteers
14 in Northeast Indiana, who advanced the team to the National
15 Future City Finals;
16 Whereas, The Future City Competition is a project-based
17 learning experience in which students in 6th, 7th, and 8th
18 grades imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future;
19 Whereas, Future City is one of the nation's leading
20 engineering education programs and has received national
21 recognition and acclaim for its role in encouraging middle
22 school students to develop their interest in science, technology,
23 engineering, and math (STEM);
24 Whereas, More than 45,000 middle school students from
25 1,500 schools in more than 40 regions from across the nation
26 participated in the national competition;

1 Whereas, Students were asked to address an authentic,
2 real-world question of "How can we make the world a better
3 place?";
4 Whereas, The theme of the competition was "Clean Water:
5 Tap Into Tomorrow";
6 Whereas, Norwell Middle School students designed a virtual
7 city using computer software, researched a citywide issue, and
8 wrote an essay describing their findings and innovative
9 solutions;
10 Whereas, The futuristic city of Yemoga was engineered using
11 more than 5,000 bottle caps that Norwell Middle School
12 students melted down to mold the buildings;
13 Whereas, Norwell Middle School students put in more than
14 1,000 man-hours to produce their city; and
15 Whereas, Norwell Middle School students took home the
16 Grand Prize of a trip to U.S. Space Camp and $7,500 for their
17 school's STEM program, showing the nation just how bright
18 Hoosier students are: Therefore,
19 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
20 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
21 the Senate concurring:
22 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors
23 Norwell Middle School's students for winning the grand prize
24 in the 2020 Future City Competition.
25 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
26 Representatives shall transmit a copy of this resolution to State
27 Representative Matt Lehman for distribution.
