5 the history of the United States of America;
6 Whereas, Many women, unable to serve lawfully in the
7 profession of arms, provided critical support to the United
8 States Army during the American Revolutionary War as nurses,
9 seamstresses, and cooks;
10 Whereas, The U.S. Army reports that women did fight
11 alongside their husbands in combat or disguised themselves as
12 men in order to serve, and women took an active role providing
13 the military with intelligence on enemy troop movements
14 throughout the colonies and along the frontier;
15 Whereas, The U.S. Army reports that women served once
16 again during the Civil War in critical roles as nurses and aides
17 in addition to an estimated 400 women who secretly enlisted as
18 soldiers to fight in the Union or Confederate armies;
19 Whereas, The U.S. Army established a permanent Nurse
20 Corps in 1901, recognizing the skilled role of nurses in the
21 military, especially during the Spanish-American War and an
22 outbreak of typhoid fever, during which an estimated 1,500
23 contract nurses served in Army and Navy general hospitals and
24 throughout the Northern Hemisphere during the war effort;

5 Whereas, More than 60,000 Army nurses served around the
6 world, with an estimated 140,000 women serving in the U.S.
7 Army and the Women's Army Corps during World War II;
8 Whereas, The U.S. Army reports that more than 1,000 women
9 flew aircraft for the Women's Airforce Service Pilots during
10 that same period;
11 Whereas, The role of women in the United States military and
12 their voluntary service continued to grow over the decades,
13 especially in nursing, and an estimated 170,000 women served
14 on active duty by 1980 according to the Women in Military
15 Service Memorial Foundation;
16 Whereas, The United States, acknowledging the value and
17 strength of women in the military, offered females the
18 opportunity to serve in combat roles throughout the armed
19 forces in 2015; and
20 Whereas, Women today serve and fight alongside their fellow
21 soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines on behalf of the United
22 States of America: Therefore,
