This bill amends Idaho Code to introduce new provisions aimed at preventing sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes. A new section, 33-1637, is added to outline definitions related to athletic activities, symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest, and the responsibilities of coaches and schools. The state department of education is tasked with developing educational materials about sudden cardiac arrest symptoms, which must be acknowledged by students and their parents before participation in athletic activities. Coaches are required to complete a training course on sudden cardiac arrest at least once a year, and specific penalties are established for coaches who violate the provisions regarding the removal of students exhibiting symptoms of cardiac distress.
Additionally, the bill amends Section 33-512 to require school districts to establish policies governing the discipline of coaches in accordance with the new provisions outlined in Section 33-1637. This includes minimum penalties for coaches who fail to comply with the sudden cardiac arrest protocols. The bill declares an emergency, making it effective from July 1, 2025.
