REVISED
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
RS31216 / S1354
Idaho law currently allows for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for adults through informed consent to
treatment and for children with a court order. ECT has been demonstrated to be effective in treating
severe depression and other psychological disorders that are resistant to pharmaceutical treatment and other
interventions. This legislation sets a minimum age of twelve (12) years old for ECT and provides parents with
the ability to provide informed consent to treatment.
FISCAL NOTE
Medicaid does not cover ECT for children, so there is no impact to the General Fund.
