STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Twenty (20) percent of children have dyslexia creating unique challenges for both the students and the
educational staff who teach reading and literacy skills. It is vital to identify dyslexia as early as possible in a
child’s school years through testing and proper literacy teaching methods.
This legislation spells out requirements to screen students for dyslexia identification and for professional
development of educational staff.
FISCAL NOTE
The Fiscal impact is expected to be $97,000 This will fund one (1) FTE in the State Department of Education to
implement of the provisions of this legislation for regular public schools and public charter schools, including
providing information and resources for dyslexia screening and intervention strategies, technical assistance,
and identifying for educators high-quality professional development.
