This bill amends Iowa's Code to allow certain family members of deceased members of the United States armed forces to request that their driver's licenses and nonoperator identification cards be marked with the phrase "GOLD STAR FAMILY." Specifically, the bill provides that surviving spouses, parents, children, or siblings of service members who died while on active duty during military conflict, or as a result of such service, can apply for this designation. Upon receiving a request and satisfactory proof of eligibility, the Department of Transportation is required to issue a license or identification card that prominently displays this phrase.

Additionally, the bill includes provisions for nonoperator identification cards, ensuring that they contain the same information as standard cards but also feature the "GOLD STAR FAMILY" designation. This initiative aims to honor the sacrifices of military families and aligns with existing laws that allow veterans to have their status marked on their identification. The bill does not alter the current provisions regarding the gold star symbol used for compliance with federal REAL ID requirements.
