This bill amends the existing law regarding unit owners associations in Iowa by introducing a definition for "native vegetation," which refers to plant species indigenous to Iowa prior to European settlement. It establishes that unit owners associations cannot prohibit unit owners from planting or growing native vegetation on their lawns, provided that the area is maintained free of weeds, invasive species, and trash, and that the vegetation does not encroach on neighboring properties or public areas, nor interfere with traffic or utilities.
Additionally, while unit owners associations can create reasonable rules for the landscaping of native vegetation, these rules cannot hinder the proper maintenance of the vegetation or impose height restrictions. It is important to note that this legislation does not apply to common areas or properties owned by the unit owners association where individual unit owners lack the authority to landscape or plant.
