This bill amends the Iowa public employees retirement system to include social workers employed by the Department of Health and Human Services in the protection occupation category, provided they meet specific criteria. These criteria include being assigned to conduct child protective assessments or related investigations that require in-person contact with children and families, and performing duties that involve heightened risk, such as entering private residences or interacting with potentially dangerous individuals.
Additionally, the bill allows for the reclassification of prior service for members of the Iowa public employees retirement system whose positions are reclassified as protective occupation service under this Act. This reclassification will occur without the need for the member to pay additional contributions for the actuarial costs associated with the reclassified service, provided that the employer certifies the member's employment as constituting protection occupation service.
