This bill amends Code section 724.6 to authorize members of the general assembly to be issued a professional permit to carry weapons. It specifies that applications for such permits must be submitted to the sheriff of the county where the member resides. Additionally, the sheriff may require the applicant to complete a proficiency examination, which the applicant must pay for, before the permit is issued. The standards for this examination will not exceed those required of peace officers.
Furthermore, the bill stipulates that permits issued to members of the general assembly allow them to carry weapons anywhere in the state at all times, including on school grounds. These permits remain valid throughout the member's period of employment unless canceled, and upon termination of employment, the member is required to surrender the permit to the issuing officer for cancellation. The bill also clarifies that permits issued to members of the general assembly, as well as to peace officers, county attorneys, and assistant county attorneys, have different conditions compared to those issued to other individuals.
