This bill establishes a study committee under the Department of Transportation (DOT) to assess the feasibility of implementing wildlife crossings at specific highway locations in Iowa that experience high rates of vehicle crashes involving animals. The committee will include representatives from the DOT, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University. The committee is tasked with producing a report by January 11, 2027, which will include a data-driven ranking of high-risk highway locations, recommendations for countermeasures to reduce animal-related crashes, preliminary cost estimates, and a strategy for securing federal grants for wildlife crossings.
Additionally, the bill mandates that the study committee adopt reporting milestones and data standards throughout its research process. To enhance public engagement, the DOT is required to create a dashboard on its website to allow the public to track the committee's progress. The provisions of this section will be repealed on July 1, 2027.
