This bill proposes significant increases in the salaries and allowances for state elected officials in Iowa, effective January 1, 2027. For members of the general assembly, the annual salary will rise from $25,000 to $45,000, with a monthly allowance for expenses increasing from $300 to $450. The salaries for leadership positions, such as the speaker of the house and presiding officer of the senate, will also see substantial increases, with their salaries rising from $37,000 to $67,500 and from $27,000 to $49,000 for the president pro tempore and speaker pro tempore. Additionally, the bill introduces a cost-of-living adjustment mechanism for these salaries, which will be based on the adjustments received by executive branch noncontract state employees, capped at three percent, from 2028 to 2043.

In terms of statewide elected executive officials, the bill codifies and raises their salaries significantly. The governor's salary will increase by $100,000 to $230,000, while the lieutenant governor's salary will rise by $36,788 to $140,000. Other officials, including the secretary of state, auditor of state, treasurer of state, and secretary of agriculture, will see their salaries increase by $76,788 to $180,000, and the attorney general's salary will increase by $86,331 to $210,000. Similar to the legislative salaries, these executive salaries will also be subject to annual cost-of-living adjustments from July 1, 2027, through June 30, 2042.
