This bill amends existing Iowa law to enhance the screening process for children who may be victims of commercial sexual exploitation. It defines commercial sexual exploitation as involving a child in sex or sexually explicit activities in exchange for money, goods, services, or promises thereof. The bill mandates that when a juvenile court receives a complaint regarding a child, it must order a screening using a standardized, evidence-based, trauma-informed tool to assess for potential exploitation.

Additionally, the bill requires the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to conduct similar screenings for children when a report of child abuse is determined to be valid. This screening must also utilize a standardized, evidence-based, trauma-informed tool. The changes aim to ensure that children at risk of exploitation are identified and supported through appropriate assessments and interventions.
