This bill establishes a new special registration plate for the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) in Iowa. It allows the Department of Transportation (DOT) to issue these plates to owners of various types of motor vehicles upon application and payment of fees. The initial fee for obtaining a letter-number designated NWTF plate is set at $25, with an additional fee for personalized plates as outlined in existing law. The annual fee for maintaining these plates is $10, which is in addition to the regular registration fee. The design of the plates will be created in collaboration with the Iowa chapter of the NWTF.
The bill also stipulates that the fees collected from the issuance of these plates will be deposited into the road use tax fund and subsequently transferred to the general fund, with the proceeds appropriated to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for grants aimed at supporting wild turkey habitat conservation and hunting initiatives in Iowa. The DNR is instructed to prioritize funding for state chapters of nonprofit organizations that focus on these conservation efforts. Additionally, the DOT is prohibited from requiring a minimum number of orders before issuing the NWTF plates.
