This bill amends Section 321.34 of the Iowa Code to expand eligibility for special registration plates with a veteran processed emblem. Previously, only individuals who served in the armed forces of the United States were eligible, but the new language allows those who served in the reserve forces of the United States or the Iowa National Guard to qualify as well, regardless of the number of years of service. Additionally, it specifies that these individuals must have been discharged under honorable conditions.
The bill also modifies the definition of "veteran" in relation to eligibility for these special plates. Under current law, the term includes former members of the reserve forces who served at least 20 years or were activated for federal duty for a minimum of 90 days. The new provisions will broaden this definition to include all reserve and National Guard members who meet the honorable discharge requirement, thereby making it easier for a larger group of service members to obtain the special registration plates.
