This bill amends Iowa's motor vehicle accident reporting requirements by increasing the threshold for property damage that necessitates a written report from $1,500 to $7,500. It specifies that drivers involved in accidents resulting in injury or death, or total property damage of $7,500 or more, must submit a report to the Department of Transportation (DOT) within 72 hours of the accident. The bill also clarifies that a report is not required if the accident is investigated by a law enforcement agency.
Additionally, the bill removes the previous requirement for law enforcement officers to submit a written report to the DOT within 24 hours after completing their investigation of an accident. It maintains existing reporting requirements for accidents involving snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, which still require reports for property damage of $1,500 or more. Failure to comply with the reporting requirements can result in a simple misdemeanor, punishable by confinement for up to 30 days and a fine ranging from $105 to $855.
