This bill amends Section 321.376 of the Iowa Code regarding the employment requirements for school bus drivers. It stipulates that individuals applying for or currently employed as school bus drivers must complete a department of education-approved course of instruction within the first six months of employment and every twenty-four months thereafter. If a driver fails to provide proof of course completion, their authorization to operate a school bus will be revoked, and the department of education will notify both the employee and employer of this revocation.

Additionally, the bill introduces a provision that allows individuals who have successfully completed the required course within the previous twenty-four months to be exempt from retaking the course when applying for a position as a school bus driver in a different school district. However, these individuals must still comply with other eligibility requirements and complete the course again within twenty-four months of their last completion. This change aims to streamline the hiring process for school bus drivers while maintaining safety and compliance standards.
