This bill amends the registration requirements for vehicles of excessive size and weight operating under a single-trip permit in Iowa. It allows such vehicles to be registered with the Department of Transportation (DOT) for the combined gross weight of the vehicle and load on a single-trip basis. The fee for this single-trip registration is set at four dollars per ton for any weight exceeding forty tons. Additionally, the bill removes the existing prohibition against using a trip permit issued under Code section 326.23 in place of the required registration for oversize or overweight vehicles.

Under current law, vehicles traveling under oversize or overweight permits must be registered for their gross weight, and trip permits cannot substitute for this registration. The changes introduced by this bill aim to streamline the registration process for vehicles operating under single-trip permits, making it more cost-effective and flexible for operators while ensuring compliance with weight regulations.
