The bill establishes a new emeritus license for physicians and surgeons, as well as osteopathic physicians and surgeons, who are at least 60 years old and primarily engaged in supervising and training resident physicians. To obtain this license, applicants must submit a form prescribed by the board of medicine. The emeritus license allows the holder to maintain the same scope of practice as their previous license and is valid for three years, with the option for one renewal. Notably, licensees are exempt from continuing education requirements to maintain or renew their emeritus license.
Additionally, the application and renewal fees for the emeritus license are set at half the cost of the standard fees for practicing medicine and surgery or osteopathic medicine and surgery. The board is tasked with creating rules for the implementation of this license, including defining what it means to be primarily engaged in supervising and training resident physicians. Importantly, the bill stipulates that the board will not issue any emeritus licenses before January 1, 2026.
