This bill establishes a special enrollment period for pregnant women in Iowa, allowing them to enroll in health insurance policies at any time after a healthcare professional certifies their pregnancy. The legislation mandates that these policies, contracts, or plans must not impose any fees or penalties for the special enrollment. Coverage for the pregnant woman will be effective from the first day of the month in which the certification occurs, unless she chooses to have it start on the first day of the following month.

The bill applies to various classes of third-party payment provider policies, including individual or group accident and sickness insurance, hospital or medical service contracts, and health maintenance organization contracts, effective from January 1, 2026. However, it excludes certain types of insurance such as accident-only, specified disease, and dental or vision coverage. Additionally, the commissioner of insurance is tasked with adopting rules to administer the provisions of this bill.
