This bill amends the requirements for social studies instruction for students in grades nine through twelve in Iowa. It mandates that students must complete a minimum of one unit of United States government instruction, which includes topics such as voting procedures, voter registration, and the use of absentee ballots. Additionally, the instruction will cover the Constitution of the United States, civics education, and the roles and responsibilities of citizens in society and government. The previous requirement of one-half unit of United States government instruction has been increased to one full unit.

The bill also establishes that the educational standards related to United States government instruction will apply to school districts, accredited nonpublic schools, charter schools, and innovation zone schools. It specifies that these institutions must comply with the updated requirements in the same manner as school districts. The new provisions will take effect for school years beginning on or after July 1, 2026.
