This bill amends the requirements for social studies instruction for students in grades nine through twelve in Iowa. It mandates that students must complete a minimum of one unit of United States government instruction, which includes topics such as voting statutes and procedures, voter registration requirements, and the use of paper ballots and voting systems. Additionally, the instruction will cover the Constitution of the United States, civics education, and the roles and responsibilities of citizens in society and government. This replaces the previous requirement of only one-half unit of United States government instruction.

Furthermore, the bill establishes that the educational standards related to United States government instruction will apply to school districts, accredited nonpublic schools, charter schools, and innovation zone schools. The new requirements will take effect for school years beginning on or after July 1, 2026.
