This bill establishes health insurance coverage requirements for pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders, specifically pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS), as well as postinfectious autoimmune encephalopathy. It mandates that health carriers offering individual, group, or small group health insurance plans in Iowa provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions as deemed medically necessary by a covered person's healthcare professional. The bill outlines that treatment may include antibiotics, drugs, behavioral therapies, plasma exchange, and immunoglobulin, and it prohibits denial or delay of coverage based on prior treatments or coexisting medical conditions.

The bill specifies that these coverage requirements will apply to contracts, policies, or plans issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, and it excludes certain types of insurance from these requirements, such as accident-only and dental insurance. Additionally, it allows health carriers to request treatment notes and anticipated treatment duration from healthcare professionals. The commissioner of insurance is tasked with adopting necessary rules to administer the provisions of this bill.
