The bill amends Section 256.11 of the Iowa Code to establish specific physical activity requirements for students in public and accredited nonpublic schools. It mandates that physically able students in kindergarten through grade five engage in a minimum of thirty minutes of physical activity each school day, in addition to the existing physical education curriculum. Notably, the bill clarifies that physical education cannot be counted towards this physical activity requirement.
Furthermore, the bill stipulates that the physical activity requirement does not apply to students who are suspended or expelled. Schools are prohibited from preventing students from participating in the required physical activity unless certain conditions are met, such as the student posing a safety risk, inclement weather necessitating a change in location, early dismissal due to unforeseen circumstances, or the student being absent for reasons like illness or medical appointments.
