The Core Curriculum Act mandates the state board of regents to establish general education requirements for undergraduate students at regents institutions. The requirements include specific coursework in areas such as English composition, world languages, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, western heritage, and American heritage, totaling no more than 40 semester credit hours. Institutions are prohibited from creating additional general education requirements not outlined in the bill, and they must provide equivalent credit for transfer students. The board is also tasked with ensuring that the courses do not distort historical events or promote identity politics or theories related to systemic racism, sexism, oppression, or privilege.
Additionally, the Act allows for exceptions to the general education requirements for students in degree programs of three years or less and permits the board to waive requirements for complex fields of study. The bill empowers individuals to report potential violations to the attorney general, who can take action to enforce compliance. The provisions of this Act will apply to students enrolling in regents institutions starting from academic years on or after July 1, 2027.
