This bill amends Section 327G.2 of the Iowa Code to enhance safety measures at railway crossings. It mandates that railroad corporations constructing or operating a railway must erect at least two signs with large and distinct letters at all points where the railway crosses public roads. Additionally, the bill requires the installation of a sufficient number of gate arms, gate arm signals, and crossing signal lights that flash when a train approaches, thereby providing adequate warning to motorists and pedestrians about the proximity of the railway.
Furthermore, the bill stipulates that the railroad corporation is responsible for all costs associated with complying with these requirements. It also establishes that any railroad corporation that neglects or refuses to comply with these provisions will be liable for damages resulting from such neglect or refusal, simplifying the process for injured parties to recover damages by only needing to prove the corporation's failure to comply.
