This bill amends Section 299.2 of the Iowa Code to modify school attendance requirements for children who are either undergoing military entrance processing or are engaged in military service. It introduces two new subsections that define these categories:
NEW SUBSECTION. 7. Who is a military applicant undergoing military entrance processing and
NEW SUBSECTION. 8. Who is engaged in military service. These additions provide further clarification on the exemptions from compulsory school attendance.
Under current law, parents or guardians are required to ensure that children of compulsory attendance age attend public or accredited nonpublic schools, or receive private instruction. However, the bill expands the list of exemptions to include children involved in military activities, thereby acknowledging their unique circumstances and the potential challenges they face in maintaining regular school attendance.
