SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 110

1 A Resolution recognizing and congratulating Iowa State
2 University (ISU) wrestler David Carr for his storied
3 collegiate wrestling career.
4 WHEREAS, David Carr entered the 2024 National
5 Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I
6 wrestling championship tournament as the fourth seed
7 in the 165-pound weight class, and secured victories
8 against the fifth, second, and top seeded wrestlers
9 on his was to earning his second NCAA individual
10 title; and
11 WHEREAS, the championship match pitted him against
12 an opponent from the top team in the nation, Carr
13 relied on his experience, strength, and tactics to
14 strike early for key points in the first five seconds
15 of the match before making a third-period comeback and
16 securing the decisive point via riding time, becoming
17 the 17th Cyclone wrestler to win multiple national
18 championships; and
19 WHEREAS, having never finished lower than
20 third place (2022) on the final podium at the NCAA
21 championship, David bookended a runner-up finish (2023)
22 by skipping off the mat as a two-time national champion
23 (2021 at 157 pounds and 2024 at 165 pounds); and
24 WHEREAS, the Canton, Ohio, native ranked fourth in
25 Cyclone wrestling career winning percentage (.960),
26 posted a 120-5 record, became a five-time conference
27 finalist and four-time conference champion, is one of
28 only four Cyclones to win four individual conference

1 titles, and became the first five-time All-American in
2 program history; and
3 WHEREAS, fulfilling a goal he had for the Cyclone
4 team, along with his head coach and Big 12 Coach of
5 the Year, Kevin Dresser, Carr lead the resurgence
6 of Cyclone wrestling, helping the Cyclones win a
7 Big 12 conference championship team title and earn a
8 fourth-place team finish at the NCAA championship; and
9 WHEREAS, Nate, Carr’s father and three-time national
10 champion at ISU from 1981 to 1983, and David are one
11 of only four father-son duos to each win multiple NCAA
12 Division I national titles, with David’s most recent
13 being the 71st in Cyclone history; and
14 WHEREAS, off the mat, David also excelled in the
15 classroom, ending his career as a four-time National
16 Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American,
17 a four-time Academic All-Big 12 team member, and a
18 College Sports Communicator Academic All-American
19 (2023); NOW THEREFORE,
20 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
21 congratulates and honors David Carr for his outstanding
22 wrestling accomplishments, culminating in the 2024 NCAA
23 wrestling championship title at 165 pounds; and
24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage, the
25 Secretary of the Senate shall transmit a copy of
26 this resolution to David Carr; ISU wrestling head
27 coach, Kevin Dresser; ISU director of athletics, Jamie
28 Pollard; and ISU president, Wendy Wintersteen.
