AN ACT
MODIFYING PROVISIONS RELATED TO THE CURRICULUM PROVIDED TO
STUDENTS ENROLLED IN GRADES NINE THROUGH TWELVE BY ALLOWING
INSTRUCTION RELATED TO AGRICULTURE TO MEET A PORTION OF
THE UNIT REQUIREMENTS RELATED TO SCIENCE AND ALLOWING
INSTRUCTION RELATED TO APPLIED SCIENCES, TECHNOLOGY,
ENGINEERING, OR MANUFACTURING TO MEET A PORTION OF THE UNIT
REQUIREMENTS RELATED TO MATHEMATICS.
8 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1 Section 1. Section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraphs a and e,
2 Code 2024, are amended to read as follows:
3 a. Five units of science including.
4 (1) The five units of science shall include physics and
5 chemistry; the units of physics and chemistry, which may be
6 taught in alternate years.
7 (2) The five units of science may include not more than
8 two units of instruction related to agriculture, which may be
9 offered and taught through dedicated units of coursework or
10 through units of coursework that also meet the requirements of
11 the coursework required under paragraph “h”, subparagraph (1),

12 subparagraph division (a). The state board shall adopt rules
13 pursuant to chapter 17A to implement this subparagraph.
14 e. Two additional units of mathematics. The two additional
15 units of mathematics may include instruction related to applied
16 sciences, technology, engineering, or manufacturing, including
17 transportation, distribution, logistics, architecture, and
18 construction, which may be offered and taught through dedicated
19 units of coursework or through units of coursework that
20 also meet the requirements of the coursework required under
21 paragraph “h”, subparagraph (1), subparagraph division (c).
22 The state board shall adopt rules pursuant to chapter 17A to
23 implement this paragraph.
24 Sec. 2. Section 256E.7, subsection 2, paragraph g, Code
25 2024, is amended to read as follows:
26 g. Be subject to and comply with the requirements of
27 section 256.7, subsection 21, and the educational standards of
28 section 256.11, unless specifically waived by the state board
29 during the application process; provided, however, that the
30 state board shall not waive any of the following educational
31 standards:
(1) The educational standards established in section 256.11,
subsection 5, paragraph “a”, related to the use of instruction
related to agriculture to fulfill a portion of the unit

34 requirements related to science.
1 (2) The educational standards established in section
2 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph “e”, related to the use
3 of instruction related to applied sciences, technology,
4 engineering, or manufacturing to fulfill a portion of the unit
5 requirements related to mathematics.
6 Sec. 3. Section 256F.4, subsection 2, Code 2024, is amended
7 by adding the following new paragraphs:
8 NEW PARAGRAPH. p. Be subject to and comply with the
9 requirements of section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph “a”,
10 relating to the use of instruction related to agriculture to
11 fulfill a portion of the unit requirements related to science
12 in the same manner as a school district.
13 NEW PARAGRAPH. q. Be subject to and comply with the
14 requirements of section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph “e”,

15 relating to the use of instruction related to applied sciences,
16 technology, engineering, or manufacturing to fulfill a portion
17 of the unit requirements related to mathematics in the same
18 manner as a school district.
