1 An Act relating to the use capacity of campground septic
2 systems.
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 Section 1. Section 455B.173, subsection 3, Code 2024, is
2 amended by adding the following new paragraph:
3 NEW PARAGRAPH. c. (1) The commission shall require a
4 campground with hookups to have a septic system with a use
5 capacity based on the number of campsites that is rated for the
6 higher of either of the following:
7 (a) Twenty-five gallons per day for each camping site using
8 the septic system.
9 (b) The peak monthly water usage of the septic system for
10 the previous year divided by the number of days in that month
11 and the number of campsites.
12 (2) If a campground does not a have metered water source,
13 the septic system of the campground shall be rated for
14 forty-five gallons per day for each campsite using the septic
15 system.
16 EXPLANATION
17 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
18 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
19 This bill requires a minimum septic system use capacity for
20 campgrounds. The environmental protection commission shall
21 require a campground with hookups to have a septic system with
22 a use capacity based on the number of campsites that is rated
23 for the higher of either 25 gallons per day for each camping
24 site using the septic system, or the peak monthly water usage
25 of the septic system for the previous year divided by the
26 number of days in that month and the number of campsites. A
27 campground without a metered water source shall maintain a
28 septic system rated for 45 gallons per day for each campsite.
