1 Section 1. Section 483A.8, Code 2022, is amended by adding
2 the following new subsection:
3 NEW SUBSECTION. 9. A person who is issued a bow season deer
4 hunting license and who is unsuccessful in taking a deer under
5 such license and tag during a bow season established by the
6 commission by rule may use the bow season deer hunting license
7 and tag during the late muzzleloader season or the January
8 antlerless deer hunting season established by the commission by
9 rule that follows the bow season for which the license and tag
10 were valid. A person hunting with a bow season deer hunting
11 license and unfilled tag pursuant to this subsection may use a
12 crossbow during the January antlerless deer hunting season.
13 EXPLANATION
14 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
15 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
16 Pursuant to current rules, the natural resource commission
17 (NRC) may establish an antlerless deer only deer hunting season
18 from January 11 through the second Sunday after that date
19 if there are at least 100 unsold antlerless deer only deer
20 hunting licenses in the county on the third Monday in December
21 preceding the season.
22 This bill allows a person who was unsuccessful in taking
23 a deer during a bow season established by NRC by rule while
24 using a bow season deer hunting license to use the license and
25 unfilled tag during the late muzzleloader season or the January
26 antlerless deer hunting season that follows the bow season
27 for which the license and tag were valid. A person hunting
28 pursuant to the bill is authorized to hunt using a crossbow
29 during the January antlerless deer hunting season.
