SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

uRGING the board of land and natural resources to extend FOR A PERIOD OF TEN YEARS THE LEASES AND SUBLEASES ON MAUNA KEA LANDS.

 

 


     WHEREAS, the lands of Mauna Kea are currently leased to the Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority pursuant to Act 255, Session Laws of Hawaii 2022; and

 

     WHEREAS, the lands of Mauna Kea are further subleased to persons and entities for the purpose of operating telescope observatories or other astronomical research purposes; and

 

     WHEREAS, the master lease and all subleases of Mauna Kea lands are set to expire on December 31, 2033; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2026, that, notwithstanding any law to the contrary, the Board of Land and Natural Resources is urged to extend for a period of ten years any lease or easement between the Board and the University of Hawaii pertaining to Mauna Kea lands that is currently in effect and transferred to the Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority pursuant to Act 255, Session Laws of Hawaii; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, notwithstanding any law to contrary and subject to the respective sublessee, the Board of Land and Natural Resources is encouraged to extend for a period of ten years all subleases of Mauna Kea lands to persons and entities for the purpose of operating telescope observatories or other astronomical research purposes; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, and Chairperson of the Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority.
