This bill mandates collaboration between the Office of Educational Facilities and the Office of Safe Schools within the Department of Education, along with various stakeholders, to review the State Requirements for Educational Facilities. The collaboration will involve at least one state university with expertise in educational facility design, district facilities directors, representatives from the Florida Building Commission, and law enforcement officials. The review aims to enhance teacher and student safety and accountability through improvements in the physical plant of schools. Specific areas of focus include recommended changes to construction and renovations to mitigate misconduct, the application of crime prevention principles through environmental design, and configurations of physical spaces to ensure visibility and control over student interactions.
The bill also requires that the recommendations from this review be submitted to the Department of Education, which will then forward them to the Florida Building Commission as part of its biennial review process. This submission will include copies sent to key state officials, including the Governor and legislative leaders. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
