The bill establishes new educational requirements regarding congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) in Florida. It mandates the Department of Health to develop educational materials about CMV for distribution to expectant and new parents or caregivers, which must be provided by hospitals, birth centers, and obstetrics and gynecology practices. The materials will cover the causes, symptoms, effects, and prevention of CMV, emphasizing the importance of early testing in newborns to prevent long-term health complications. Additionally, the Department will distribute these materials to child care facilities.
Furthermore, the bill requires certain health care practitioners to complete a board-approved continuing education course on CMV as part of their initial licensure and every other renewal starting July 1, 2026. This course will cover similar topics as the educational materials for parents and caregivers. Licensees must submit proof of course completion during their renewal process, and the hour spent on this course will count towards their continuing education requirements. Non-compliance with these requirements may result in disciplinary action.
