This bill amends section 1001.42 of the Florida Statutes to enhance student support services in K-12 schools by allowing district school boards to refer students to organizations that provide various support services, including mentoring, counseling, tutoring, and extracurricular programs. To be eligible for referral, organizations must not restrict participation based on race, color, or ethnicity, and mentoring organizations must demonstrate diversity among their staff. Additionally, the bill mandates that individuals interacting with students undergo level 2 background screenings, with organizations responsible for maintaining their own screening documentation.
The bill also requires public schools that offer mentoring or student support services to post detailed information about these programs on their websites, including program descriptions, eligibility requirements, and contact information. District school boards are tasked with ensuring compliance with these provisions and maintaining relevant documentation. Furthermore, district school superintendents must submit a compliance report to the Department of Education upon request, detailing the number of schools and students involved in these programs, as well as demographic information about the students served. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
