The bill amends the definition of "autism" in section 393.063 of the Florida Statutes to include "autism spectrum disorder," aligning it with the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders by the American Psychiatric Association. This revision replaces the previous definition, which described autism as a pervasive, neurologically based developmental disability characterized by severe learning, communication, and behavior disorders. The new definition aims to provide a more contemporary understanding of autism and its spectrum.

Additionally, the bill modifies section 1012.582 by requiring the State Board of Education to adopt rules regarding autism spectrum disorder for K-12 teachers, rather than allowing them to do so at their discretion. The new rules will mandate that teachers of classes with at least 50% of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder obtain an Autism Spectrum Disorder Endorsement. There is also a provision for exceptions to this requirement for teachers who hold an Endorsement in Severe or Profound Disabilities, have at least three years of experience teaching students with autism, and have received a highly effective rating in the past three years. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
