The bill amends Section 320.08001 of the Florida Statutes to introduce specific provisions regarding battery electric vehicles (BEVs). It defines a battery electric vehicle as a motor vehicle powered solely by an electric motor that draws current from rechargeable batteries and does not have an internal combustion engine. In addition to the existing license tax for electric vehicles, owners of BEVs will be required to pay an annual fee of $250 at the time of initial registration and at each renewal thereafter.
The bill also stipulates that the fees collected from BEV owners will be deposited into the State Transportation Trust Fund, which is designated for the planning, construction, maintenance, and repair of public roads and transportation infrastructure. The effective date for this act is set for July 1, 2026.
