This bill amends section 1009.265 of the Florida Statutes to require state universities and Florida College System institutions to waive tuition and fees for employees of sheriffs' offices, in addition to existing state employees. The bill specifies that these waivers apply to up to 6 credit hours of courses per term on a space-available basis, contingent upon approval from the relevant agency head or sheriff. Furthermore, the Chief Financial Officer is tasked with identifying ways to reduce the administrative burden associated with verifying employment for both state and sheriffs' office employees.
The bill also clarifies the definition of employees eligible for the tuition waivers. It includes full-time sworn law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and civilian employees of sheriffs' offices as eligible for the benefits. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
